TAR 7.11
Ever since my forced TAR hiatus (I missed season 3 because I had no TV - it's tragic that I missed JVJ), no team I have rooted for has ever won the race. (On the other hand, I am 2/2 with the Apprentice. Go Kendra!)
I should try not to actively root for the team I want to win.
Season 4. David and Jeff. Don't even make it to the finish line. And before the final 3, the Clowns.
Season 5. Colin and Christie. The best racers of the season, but last minute carelessness and having people who did the tasks the slowest get to the airport last with the best luck... didn't happen. (Not to mention the not-shown flat tire.)
Season 6. Kris and Jon. A bad American Airlines ticket agent lets Freddy and Kendra win. (And for once, I'm actually among the masses rooting for someone as opposed to my usual minority status.)
Season 7. Rob and Amber. The controversial racers because of all the people who think they don't "deserve" to be there and the people who can't stand Rob. Getting lost in Little Havana and the BS call-back of the plane (oh c'mon, you can't tell me that there was no begging by production to let them on the plane; planes don't get called back like that) means they end up in second. Not a horrible thing lest the conspiracy theories start rolling that production fixed the race for R&A, but they were clearly the better racers of the bunch.
I don't dislike Uchenna and Joyce. They deserve to win because they got to the finish line first. But were they the best racers? No. Would they have been there if a plane hadn't been called back? No. Are they nice? Yes. Does being nice mean you should be the winners? No, not really. It's a race.
I said all along that I wouldn't be upset if any of the 3 teams left won. And I'm not upset. But the Romber hate from the euphoric people about Uchenna & Joyce is kind of pissing me off. You'd almost think those fans were personally maligned by Romber. Which they weren't. Be happy for U/J. Cheer. Say you're happy Romber didn't win. But all this "take that" and "they didn't deserve it" is crap. They don't deserve it because they already won Survivor? So what? The producers picked them just the same as they picked everyone else. Just because they won a million dollars before doesn't make them less "worthy" of winning. Who's to say that any of these teams didn't already have a million dollars in the bank? No one would have thought them less worthy. You don't like Rob because of his attitude? Fine. Don't think they're "worthy"? Find another word. You don't like the producers because of stuntcasting? Fine, blame the producers. Don't blame the people who asked to be on the show and were granted their wish.
Anyway. I guess my problem is that, while I like the nice people, I value good racing above who the "nicest" people are. Unless it's a second coming of Jonathan (S6) in a person with racing talent, I root for the people who can work the airports, the people who navigate well, the people who are competent with task choices and performance. It's a race, and I look for good racers. It's sort of like the meritocracy ideal - those who work the hardest should be rewarded in the end. It doesn't really happen, since so much of the race is based on luck (and taxi karma!) but it would be nice to believe that all your hard work actually means something. (Big problem with the more recent races - bunching... glad they did less in this race, but it was still bad.)
This wasn't a bad season. It was pretty good and thanks to the spoiler battles in the later legs of the race, it's definitely been nailbiting. It's a good result, although I did figure out the result as soon as Uchenna and Joyce got put on that plane to Miami. The inspirational story arc couldn't result in a Rob & Amber win. It started back from the inspirational themed trailers before the season, and ended with the middle of the pack team that had to shave their heads, race with no money, beat all the odds to win. The arc was complete. It's a nice story, nice people. I definitely have to say they got lucky though. No plane gets called back to the gate in real life.
Alright. Rant over. Breathing back to normal. I just had to get that off my chest, since I'm pretty aggravated with all the R/A hate and cheering over their being "less deserving." Argh. Rob and Amber ran a good race. I'll be watching their wedding. :) If only for memories of Atlantis...
Now, to look forward to Lost and Alias tomorrow. Must do some reading, get some sleep and gear up for that. It's going to be awesome. I love my JJ shows. :)

SATC
It's done.
3.5 weeks, 94 episodes, 3 alternate endings. Done.
And what a ride it's been.
Watching all 6 seasons of Sex and the City in 3.5 weeks was amazing. I had seen almost all of the episodes before, some of them multiple times. There were only a few that were completely new. I knew exactly how the show started and I knew exactly how it would end.
But watching the finale for the second time was even more emotionally powerful than the first. I was crying my eyes out for the entire end of the finale. In a good way. Crying with a big smile on my face. Because I was in the camp that thought the ending of the show was absolutely perfect.
With so many hours of the show in such a short time, there's a much stronger emotional connection with the characters than watching it weekly for 6 years. You feel like you're friends with them - you cry with their losses and cheer when they find happiness. Which explains why I found myself uncontrollably bawling for 10 minutes.
If you have the time, I highly recommend watching the DVD sets one guilty pleasure after the next. It's a much deeper experience. And a lot of relationship questions to think about. You really get sucked into the characters' stories.
May we all have friendships and relationships that make us as happy as those 4 girls made each other. I love this show.

Noise Revenge
I have not resorted to noise warfare yet, but if I were to do so, this would be the perfect weapon. I saw it on Boing Boing this morning. During the moments today when their bass was on, I thought about how deliciously sweet it would be to fight back with this.
But I am trying to be good. Patience. Concentration. Controlled temper. Unlike freshman year of college (sigh). Must work through proper channels before taking matters into my own hands.
I've eaten too many sour Starbursts today. Oh well.
Oh - you know what's sad about the experience this weekend? I've been doing research into earplugs, and the ones I have are actually on the high end of noise reduction, based on decibel levels. Can you imagine if I had earplugs that blocked out less? *shudder*
Okay, noise aside. Must let it go for now so I can do some reading.
Will instead think about the yummy lunch Alvin and I had at El Norte today. I like tortas. Yum.

Recovery
Despite having a lot of homework to do, I have recovered from my earlier bout of insanity.
Except it wasn't really insanity. It was more like rage. And instead of taking it out on any person or thing, I took it out on the internet. ;-)
It's much safer that way, really.
I don't know what it is about subwoofers that totally gets under my skin. They bring out some sort of anger in me that I hate, but that I can't suppress, since I can barely hear myself think. Oh well. I shouldn't dwell on my neighbors. If I do, it means they've won.
And they will not win this one!
Onto happier topics. It's May sweeps. It's going to be a fantastic jam-packed month of TV. I already have 2.5 hours backed on my tape that I need to watch. The only problem with May sweeps is that the final week of sweeps (all the finales) coincides with all my exams. But if you think I'm giving up the shows for the studying... you don't know me that well. ;-)
After all, my marriage final is the day after Rob and Amber's televised wedding. And my ethics exam is the day after 24. It all works out perfectly, as far as subject matter goes!
It's past my bedtime. Time to let my ears recover from this very taxing day. It's going to be a busy busy week.

Plea for Guidance
Does anyone have any experience with (or any opinions on) active noise cancellation headphones? Please help a distressed soul.
Earplugs of Nothing
My inconsiderate neighbors need to learn a simple concept called volume control.
I have complained about this before, when they played their subwoofer at inappropriate times (2 am, 6:30 am). I'm generally a little more okay with it (although annoyed) during the day, since they're generally waking hours, and take methods to try to cope.
But I hear their ******* subwoofer over my ******* earplugs.
Through 2 acoustically insulated walls.
Now that is not acceptable. I have at least 3 white noise appliances going and have earplugs on, yet I still hear the bass beat of their subwoofer.
Are people really that clueless about what people can hear on the other side of the wall?
I realize that they just might not care (prior incidents as support for this hypothesis), but can they really be that dumb?
I guess with a certain someone in the White House and Scott still on American Idol, the answer clearly is yes, they could. But please, are you really telling me people aren't smart enough to realize that their loud noises can be heard across a wall where other people live? They're that ******* oblivious?
Yes, I am feeling rage. No, I will not apologize for it.
******* idiots.

And to think I was actually attempting to work. Maybe I should go shove their ******* subwoofer up their ******* asses.
That would make me feel so much better, don't you think?

I don't want to have to pound down their door to ask them to lower the volume only to find that they left the machine on and they're not home (they don't answer the phone). I don't want to have to have it out with them when it comes time to study for the bar, when time is actually so crucial that I refuse to deal with their inconsiderate ****. But if I have to, I will.
Okay, enough vulgarity for one post [ETA: starred; I am sure you can figure it out]. I was in a nice productive mood today, despite 2 episodes of Sex and the City, and their lack of consideration has severely impaired my focus. I wish they had one of those remote TV shut-off devices for subwoofers. They should make them - since subwoofers in multi-unit buildings are largely nuisances. If they had one, I'd be first on line to get it. And for the record, I hate that commercial (what is it? VW?) with the people jumping on the floor and buying subwoofers. I'm glad they eventually wise up and get a house so they can do that, but that commercial just brings too many bad memories.
