Broca

Okay. What the HECK is going on upstairs?

I don't know if it's one floor above me or two floors above me, but with the amount of drilling going on, I feel like the floor up above is going to collapse and fall on me. What's with all the drilling? The nonstop drilling?

And WHY?

And it's only been going on for the past half hour, which... coincidentally... is when I started trying to work.

As usual.

Oh well. It alternates between drilling and hammering, but the drilling is far more annoying. I just wish I knew what was going on, and whether it's going to get worse to the point where I have to leave.

Until then, back to search & seizure.

PelĂculas

Watching trailers on Apple now instead of doing some Barbri stuff. (I'll do it later, really!) I know I've made previous lists including summer movies (here and here), but here's some of the new trailers that I liked:

Ladies in Lavender: Judi Dench and Maggie Smith and a cute boy in a sort of historical romance. It looks like it could be good.

Up for Grabs: Documentary based on the Barry Bonds million dollar baseball (#73), the one that went to court (and that we read about and talked about in law school!). Looks like it could be a very entertaining movie.

Dukes of Hazzard: Already on the list, but just watched the trailer. Doesn't look very good, but it could be amusing.

Flightplan: Intriguing trailer, good story, even kind of spooky. I might be able to go for this, if it doesn't turn out to be some of horror suspense creepy movie. (Sept 23)

Howl's Moving Castle: Miyazaki. Doesn't that say it all? (June 10, select)

The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe: Also already on my mental list, but all I can say is that I hope it comes out good. Like Harry Potter or something, because these are beloved books. (Dec 9)

March of the Penguins: Maybe I'm partial because I love penguins, but you HAVE to watch this trailer. It's both sweet and funny, and it's like a little movie all in itself. You really should watch it! Penguins are the best. :)

[I assume it's obvious that I haven't watched trailers in a long time, right? Which is why there's so many new ones to see...]

Deep Blue: Documentary about ocean life. I don't know what it is about today (first, the sandwich thing, and now this), but I usually skip the documentary trailers. I've watched 3 today and I've loved them all! This one looks absolutely beautiful.

Saving Face: Looks really well-done. About different Chinese American experiences. Supposedly already in the theaters, but I guess just in limited release.

History of Violence: Could be good, could be bad. Can't tell from the trailer and don't want to take the time right now to watch the "exclusive clip."

Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit: It looks so good!! I can't wait for this to come out. And I love how where Apple lists the stars, it actually says "Wallace" and "Gromit." What I thought was unnecessary was talking about "Chicken Run" in the beginning. Why bother when these two are clearly better? ;-)

Bewitched: I know there have been mixed things said about the movie, but I think it looks really cute. And like a movie I would definitely enjoy because a) I love Bewitched and b) I like romantic comedies. A lot. (June 24)

Stealth: I like action movies. This looks fun.

2046: Been wanting to see this for a while too. Trailer doesn't give much away.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory: Yay!! :)

Dreamer: Sweet movie and beautiful horse. (Oct 21)

[Oops. I wrote this post and then left it here for about 3 hours without finishing it!]

After Dreamer, I watched the first 6 minutes of Mad Hot Ballroom. I already wanted to see the movie, and when the 6 minutes were over, I was so bummed because I wanted to see the rest of the movie! Oh well. I guess I'll watch it sometime.

What were my favorite trailers? Wallace and Gromit, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and March of the Penguins. You really should watch the Penguin trailer. It's great. :)

Unbrauchbar

[I am unclear about whether this word should be "unbrauchbar" or "unbrauchbares" because Babelfish and Google Translate are giving me different results. Help! I don't know grammar in this language; I've never studied it.]

I need to stop checking for grades. It is useless. There aren't going to be any more grades until the last minute before graduation. There will be no relief from the anxiety about whether or not I will pass. If I keep checking, I'm just going to make myself feel worse from not knowing. And there's really no point in checking. Because the grades won't be there. Because they want me to lose my mind over the fear that I won't graduate. (As if I haven't already...)

Having another important problem - the Chicago Police Department's fingerprinting line keeps sending me to "the attendant" on their voice mail system, but that transfer keeps disconnecting me. I need to be fingerprinted and have the cards mailed in before July 1st!

The past couple of hours have been very much about errands. After this post, I am off to consolidate my loans, fill out my MBE transfer form and renew prescriptions. I already requested my driver's abstract, found important records, called PMBR, sorted out my bar forms, checked dates on my checks and wrote out checks to pay the phone and parking bills.

Busy busy busy.

But at least in the time between almost falling asleep in NY Practice III and starting errands, I got a sandwich from Jimmy Johns. I love sandwiches at Jimmy Johns, and from the moment I left Barbri, I was craving a sandwich. But I had no cash, only a credit card (this is the norm for me), and I wasn't sure that JJ's took credit cards. So I went to Potbelly first, but the line was about 20something people, and I was so hungry and not willing to wait. I was so sad and resigned myself to having Michelina's again, but then saw that they took credit cards at Jimmy Johns and was so so so excited and ended up having a yummy yummy sandwich for lunch. I don't know what chemical imbalance I have right now but I'm craving another one of their sandwiches for dinner. It doesn't make any sense! I like sandwiches (made by others), but I've never craved them this badly. I don't get it.

Anyway, time to consolidate my loan. A bunch more things to do and then I can start doing Barbri studying. Wheeeee motions and arbitration.

Nauseabundo

Babelfish claims this is the word for "nauseous." I hope they're right. I don't want to be misusing words, and my Vox dictionary is at home.

Anyway, I'm nauseous. I looked out the window and it made me want to throw up.

Why?

Well, first, I woke up an hour late. I should still make it to class in time, but I hate rushing in the morning because it actually makes me feel sick. For example, when I finally got out of bed, my pulse was racing; it's eleven minutes later and it still hasn't stopped.

But what really made me feel sick?

Remember those skinny bugs on the window?

Well, these aren't striped. But there's like 30 of them. It's like an infestation. They're on both the screened window and the non-screened window. What are they? FLIES.

Like the really gross flies that come out in summer and circle around all your food, or at the zoo around all the animals. Skinny black bodies (growing), the white wings, oh it was SO gross looking out the window and realizing that both inside and outside the screen, there were flies everywhere.

How are they getting inside the screen?? Can they get inside the apartment? I'm definitely NOT opening the window; I don't care if I want a picture. And this has never happened before. The problem is usually thumb-sized scary spiders taking up residence on our windows and making window-sized webs. If all these flies are here... does this mean all the spiders are gone?

But what are all these disgusting baby flies doing 30 floors above ground? Some aren't that big and most are really skinny; they actually look like they're still in the process of growing.

And my goodness, bugs this close to me really make me sick. I was just going to see what the skinny bugs were, and then eat my yogurt, but it's so hard to eat right now.

It's seriously like an infestation. The flies are everywhere. And I want them to go away lest one of them sneak into my apartment and drive me away to the Northwestern library, screaming in fear. Alvin's family got me this electric (is it electric?) bug zapper from Taiwan, and I'm grateful for that, but I think these things are so skinny that they'd either fly through the charged bars, or in my frenzied fear of trying to catch it, I'd miss so many times that I'd end up hitting something else that I don't want to fry.

So, anyway, if anyone has any methods of bug protection, I'd love to hear them. Help out a poor girl from feeling sick. :(

Venti

And the summer of reality shows and reruns is in full swing.

NBC debuted Hit Me Baby One More Time tonight, and despite reading some quotes from skeptical critics, I checked it out. It was really enjoyable! Sort of like American Idol for has-beens. The money goes to charity, the groups sing one of their hits and a new song, and the studio audience votes. It's only on for 3 weeks, but it will be fun to watch while it's around.

Tonight was Loverboy, CeCe Peniston, Flock of Seagulls, Arrested Development and Tiffany. Some of them still sound really good! And I was surprised about how much CeCe Peniston's voice wasn't digitally altered in her original recording - she sounded almost the same as she did on the recording. Pretty good stuff.

What's good about this summer of reality shows is that there's not that many dating shows. (Let's leave aside Average Joe 4: The Joes Strike Back or whatever NBC is calling it.) Now, I'm not saying they're all good shows (see: I Want to Be a Hilton) but some are pretty enjoyable (see: Beauty and the Geek). And it's summer - no one's looking for a high quality show. Just something that will be fun. So far this week I've seen Beauty and the Geek, Dancing with the Stars and Hit Me Baby One More Time. Fun stuff. :)

And now, back to NY Practice.

Diciannove

Day 2 of NY Practice complete. Well, the class time, anyway.

I'm reading through blogs over lunch and I'm amused at what Blogger is doing to my bookmarks list. Before, most people who had blogs on Blogspot had regular white paper box things next to their sites. But now, all of a sudden, whenever I click on a Blogger user, it turns that little white rectangle into a big orange box with a B. (the Blogger logo for those of you who don't use it)

I don't mind the orange box. But the whole thing is kind of funny. Click, orange box. Click, orange box. Click, orange box. It's almost like, "how many orange boxes in a row can I make?" It reminds me of something, but I'm not sure exactly what. Maybe that Memory game. Since they all match now with their shiny orange boxes.

Or maybe I'm just delusional, having endured 3 hours and 45 minutes of NY Practice details. All I can say is that I was much more awake during the mnemonics sections than any of the others. And I don't think it's the Professor's fault. He's trying and he's dynamic... the material is just dry. But yeah, I'd rather make everything on a list conform to something like "SPARERIBS" rather than just writing a list of things. More mnemonics, please! :)

Since I finally have a completed outline (crim), I'm going to take it down to the gym shortly, instead of sitting here for the usual 2 pm showing of Law & Order. But I just ate... so maybe I should wait... Nah, I just had a Michelina's, they're not very substantial. Off to the gym I shall go. After I turn the rest of my column of blogs orange. ;-)

Yesterday, when I got an email from the registrar, I got really worried.

It said all our grades should be up for viewing by June 9th. Except the way it was worded, one could interpret that as meaning, we're busy, we're doing grade-related stuff, nothing will be online until June 9th.

Which is fine - except that that's the day before graduation! Could it be possible that we might not know until the day before graduation that we are, in fact, graduating?

Could the anxiety be any worse? I had thought they had said we'd know by June 6th... at least that would give it a couple days to settle in if it were bad news, or maybe some time to beg for mercy. But June 9th? Argh!

It is possible that we might not know for sure until June 9th whether we're graduating... but at least some grades seem to be appearing online. I got one this morning - although it's not one of the two I'm most concerned about passing. But nevertheless, I am 3 credits closer to graduation, as I have passed Con Law! Yay!

11 more credits to pass before I can graduate. Please, please, grades come soon!

Diciassette

I like procedure. Really, I do. It's just getting bogged down in the minute details that you have to memorize for NY Practice that makes me a little loca.

Example that I've been sharing with family & friends today (who may or may not care, probably the latter): In NY, you cannot serve process on someone (summons & complaint or summons with notice) on Sundays, and Saturdays if you know they observe Saturday Sabbath, but holidays not on Sundays are okay.

Like I was saying... details.

Of course, now that I've made that my example of the day, I'm sure to remember it for the bar exam. Unfortunately, there are not enough days before the bar exam to do this for all the minute things I need to learn. (But maybe I should just make one example of the day to tell everyone, because not only am I learning, but I'm enriching the lives of others.)

But I am just about done with my criminal law outline/chart (still have to do criminal procedure). This means I have something to read on the elliptical and can go to the gym. Because there's no way the Barbri books I have will fit on the elliptical machine downstairs without falling off. At least I don't trust the books to stay balanced and I don't want to damage my lifeline to passing the bar exam.

This weekend, I intend to catch-up on all the stuff I need to do for Barbri. That is, unless I spontaneously rip open DVD sets of Angel or Buffy. But I'll be good. After all, the Jetsons already have control of the DVD player. (And I've been really good and only watched one episode, and that was because cable was out temporarily over the weekend.)

Time for sleep. More NY Practice tomorrow, and he told us to get a good night's sleep so we can plow through the material. I guess that means it might be boring. ;-)

Sedici

Slow and Steady
Your friends see you as painstaking and fussy.
They see you as very cautious, extremely careful, a slow and steady plodder.
It'd really surprise them if you ever did something impulsively or on the spur of the moment.
They expect you to examine everything carefully from every angle and then usually decide against it.

Quindici

I have not kept up with my Barbri Paced Program today (or any day, for that matter). I refuse to allow myself to feel guilty for not being up-to-date before today, because due to our school schedule, I needed that time off. Otherwise, I would be burnt out by tomorrow. But now, I need to get moving.

What have I done? Well, I retyped my notes from today's class...

... and it took me hours, because NY Practice just... isn't as exciting as criminal law and procedure. I kept taking breaks... lots of Minesweeper, watched L&O and Angel and Charmed, googled blogs talking about Barbri...

And then I watched Beauty and the Geek on the WB, the show "from the daring mind of Ashton Kutcher" (oh please). It was actually pretty good. Lots of laughs, no editing making people look bad just for ratings, and people who actually want to learn from each other. I could keep watching this show. :)

And right now, watching Dancing with the Stars. It's fun, but not as good as Beauty and the Geek. But what's good is that summer reality shows are all starting now giving me things to watch. But oh... Barbri... right... ;-)
