Blender Strikes Again

While I'm doing work, I'm watching "VH1 and Blender Present the 20 Most Awesomely Bad Songs of 2004" on VH1. You may know what I think of Blender Magazine, due to their list of the worst songs ever and my strong disagreement with their list. Here's a running list of my thoughts on the songs:

20. Limp Bizkit - Behind Blue Eyes. Maybe it's butchering because it's a remake. But other than that, I've never heard it all year.

19. Ruben Studdard - Sorry 2004. Haha. I remember laughing about this song in St. Louis. It's actually the only non-AI song I know that Ruben has sung! And it sort of caught in my head. But I'll have to agree with this one, not a very good song.

18. Wildlife - All Things. The theme song to Queer Eye! No way - I like this song!! Don't agree. Do. Not. Agree. I mean, they have a point that there's not that many lyrics to it, but there are a LOT of songs like that! I like it. Not on my worst-of-2004 list.

17. Josh Groban - You Raise Me Up. I really like this song. It's so not awesomely bad. You can't associate Josh Groban with "awesomely bad." They aren't in the same sentence. No, not a bad song! Not at all.

[Just had a conversation with Alvin because I've screamed, "I don't agree!" twice at the TV. He joked that maybe it tells me something about my musical tastes. My response: "Actually, I think it tells me something about Blender Magazine." After all, they are the ones who put songs like "Sounds of Silence" and "We Didn't Start the Fire" on the worst songs ever list!]

16. Christina Milian - Dip It Low. Okay, I downloaded that song from iTunes. It was catchy! Obviously, I don't agree that it's "awesomely bad" or I wouldn't have downloaded it.

15. Jimmy Buffett and Friends - Hey Good Lookin'. Don't know this song, so no comment.

14. Juvenile - Slow Motion. Also don't know this song, so no comment again.

13. 311 - Love Song. Okay, I like the original, so I don't really like this one.

12. Ludacris - Splash Waterfalls. Also don't know this song. Hmm.

11. Clay Aiken - Invisible. Most people who know me know how I feel about Clay Aiken. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that I strongly disagree. The lyrics to the song aren't great, but the song itself is not awesomely bad.

10. Hilary and Haylie Duff - Our Lips Are Sealed. I like the original, of course, but it isn't that bad! It's not good, but it's not as bad as these people are making it out to be.

9. Kimberley Locke - Eighth World Wonder. Wow, AI is really striking out with Blender. Like that's a surprise. I don't really know this song though, so no comment.

8. Mase - Breathe, Stretch, Shake. I don't think I really know this song.

7. JC Chasez - Some Girls (Dance With Women). Eh? Never heard of this song.

6. Kevin Lytton - Turn Me On. It's just okay, but not that bad!

5. Britney Spears - My Prerogative. Okay, yeah, I hate this song. Britney needs to go back to when her songs were good... like her first CD. [Why did Jordan Knight agree to do this Blender Magazine thing when they put an NKOTB song on the worst 50 songs of all time list?]

4. Toby Keith - Whiskey Girl. I don't really know this song either, but I'm not big into country, so I probably don't know if this is good or not.

3. Eamon - F*** It (Don't Want You Back). Oh, I've actually heard this song on the radio. I guess it's just considered "bad" because of all the swear words.

2. Nickelback - Figured You Out. [Katrina and Ereka from the Apprentice are doing VH1 commentary? Haha.] The lyrics are pretty bad to this song, and the song's not very good. So I won't scream "I don't agree!" at the screen. I think I've screamed at the TV less often than I thought I would.

[The heck? "Coming up... the 3 most awesomely bad American Idol songs of the year"?? They said that over Kelly Clarkson singing "Breakaway"... which I like. And besides that... they already have 3 AI songs on the list - so what's the point???]

[Oh it's based on a VH1 viewer poll - results: Breakaway, Invisible, and then the #1 worst was Sorry 2004.]

And the #1 most awesomely bad song of the year...

R. Kelly - U Saved Me. Alright, I'm not going to say that I disagree and this is a good song.

Okay, now that I've taken a break for this piece of crap show, I'm going to go back to work on networks and monopolies. :)

I think you now need to make a list on your personal picks for the worst songs of 2004. Hehehe.

Hmmm...I don't disagree with the list. I can absolutely understand why they chose Josh Groban, Clay Aiken, and Christina Milian.

But I thought you liked that Josh Groban song!

Okay, I'll grant that their choices for this list aren't as horrific as their choices for the 50 worst songs ever. That list was seriously misguided. Most of the songs on this one I either haven't heard of, or don't feel super-strongly about - except the ones where I shouted at the TV.

But I wouldn't argue that some of them were great songs necessarily - Christina Milian was catchy, as was Wildlife - but they're not "awesomely bad!" I happen to find the Josh Groban song quite inspiring. :) And as for Clay... well, Clay is Clay, and I've been on the Claytrain since AI, so I can't really say much else. ;-)

And I know what they say about not critiquing unless you can do better... but my mentality on listening to music has changed, I think. Whenever I hear something I don't like, I immediately switch the station. And now, since I'm concentrating on "what might I want to buy on iTunes" instead of just what's on like when downloads were "free" (not that I ever partook.....), I guess I immediately forget the bad songs. I'll keep thinking about it though.
